HARRISBURG, S.D. – A reported hostage situation in Harrisburg on Monday was determined to be a false report, leading to the arrest of a 49-year-old man.

Lincoln County dispatch received a 911 call shortly before noon claiming people were being held at gunpoint in the 100 block of Willow Street, prompting a large response from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and assisting agencies.

As a precaution, Harrisburg schools and several nearby businesses were placed on lockdown.

Investigators later identified the caller and located him walking near Cliff Avenue and 85th Street in southern Sioux Falls, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities confirmed the report was a hoax, and the man was booked into the Minnehaha County Jail on one count of making a terroristic threat, a Class 5 felony.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect’s name was not released.
