PIERRE, S.D. – Three proposed constitutional amendments have been approved for circulation in South Dakota, clearing the way for supporters to begin gathering signatures.
Secretary of State Monae Johnson said the petitions were submitted ahead of the Nov. 3 deadline. One proposal would require any legislative changes to initiative and referendum procedures to go before voters. Another would mandate a three-fourths vote in the Legislature to amend voter-approved initiated measures. The third measure seeks to repeal property taxes and replace them with a retail transaction tax.
Supporters of each amendment must collect 35,017 valid signatures by May 5 for the measures to qualify for the November 2026 ballot. Additional information is available on the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website.
